Poem: “Vortimer”

Vortimer

Bury me at Richborough, for then
Barbarians will not through here raid Britain
Though through other ports they may attack,
By my body’s lying here they will hold back

He was a warrior of Christ, this Vortimer,
Though pagan were the Saxons off the Saxon shore,
Flesh of mortal weakness now and in the past
Will not hold back barbarians, though heart hold fast

And yet in emulation of the garden Tomb
For him and other warriors dead Christ makes room
To lie with Him in silence till the next daybreak,
When sun and Christ and all of them their new lives take

One the day takes hold, and heaven, and their fellowship,
New flesh of light to live in then, old flesh to strip
