Sunday Mass Readings for the Ministry of Parents and Godparents
The Church professes Christian parents to be the “first” teachers of the faith and calls them to be the “best” teachers of the faith (The Rite of Infant Baptism). SUMMARY OF READINGS
The first reading shows a glimpse of the Trinity before time began. The Psalm reveals to us that this Beloved of God in the first reading later becomes less than the angels; this refers to the Eternal Son, Jesus, becoming man.
The second reading shows the love of the Father for us; The Father’s love is shown in giving us His Son and the Holy Spirit. The Gospel is the promise of Jesus to send the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit will guide the Church in truth.
CATECHETICAL TALKING POINTS
These readings provide an opportunity for returning to the central mystery of faith, the Most Holy Trinity.

TRUTH IN ACTION
Parents or godparents can also put the catechetical content into action through various activities. Here are just a few examples:
- Kids of all ages can begin to understand the Trinity. Be sure you take the time to talk to your child or godchild about this central doctrine of our faith.
- Read Matthew 3:16-17 (The Baptism of Jesus) and discuss the Trinity.
- Help your child or godchild know how the Sign of the Cross is to be made reverently and invokes God’s help.
- Tell stories about the child or godchild’s Baptism day and remind them how they were baptized “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
